Hannah Durdin
When Richard asked me to come and give a talk as part of the Adventure Stories series, my first instinct was to say no. Although I spend a lot of time outdoors, having what I'd term 'mini-adventures', I've not climbed any of the 8000m-ers in the Himalayas, I've not swam in the ice cold waters of Norway, I've not run a multi-day ultra in the Alps. I've swum in our local waters all year round for many years, I've run trail ultras around our coast line and across the moors, I've summited mountains in Wales and the Lake District. And what I do know is that spending as much time outside as possible is the key to keeping my mental health in a good place. As the new Director of Dartmoor based company, Moorland Guides, I'm passionate about enabling as many people as possible of all ages and from all walks of life, to discover the joys of being outside for themselves. So I'm going to talk about how you don't have to set yourself a mammoth challenge to get outside, the mental health benefits of being active outdoors, my recent Mountain Leader training, and share a few tales from some of my mini adventures |
